Stories connect people, stories help us relate. As a reporter I can use the power of video and sound to tell those stories. But I realize the news industry is changing, and I’m prepared. Defining me as a TV reporter would be too narrow. I can do it all: shoot, write, edit, produce and anchor. If I don’t know how, then I’ll learn how.
Today, making that connection means using new media. I can turn a television story into a print-style web story, a slideshow or an interactive map. Using new or multiple mediums to tell stories brings information to more people. The internet provides an unlimited forum to start a discussion or add more information.
I might get a minute-ten on TV, but I can post those extra interviews on the web. The story isn’t finished on the station website: I can blog and tweet too. It is necessary for journalists to take advantage of every storytelling medium. Only when this happens is a story fully told.
The best TV news stories are a seemingly simple presentation of facts, images and sounds. I can balance this with stories that are visual, compelling and informative. My commitment to journalism is hard to explain, but in the end I can only describe it as a passion. I bring that passion to every story I tell.
